A sunlit studio apartment high above downtown Calgary: an oak desk with a laptop and an open notebook under a wide window, a cello on its stand beside a music stand, a cream lounge chair on a round rug, and the city skyline outside.

Pursuing excellence with curiosity.

I want to know how things work, why they work, and how to make them better.

LeaseLoop

One workspace for everyone around a rental property, from owners and managers to renters and the people who fix things.

Problem
Renting out a property runs on scattered texts, spreadsheets and email threads. Owners can't see what's happening, renters can't tell whether a repair is moving, and nobody has a reliable record of who agreed to what.
Approach
Put properties, leases, rent records, maintenance, documents and messages in one place, and let each person see only what their relationship to the property allows. Pair it with an operations agent that handles the follow-up work but leaves every decision to a person.
Implementation
LeaseLoop runs on Node.js and Express 5 with PostgreSQL, Better Auth sessions and strict zod validation on every input. Authorization is relationship-based and enforced on the server for every request: managers are assigned per property, renters reach only their active lease, and providers reach only the work assigned to them. Every change is written to an append-only audit log in the same transaction. The agent runs on deterministic rules, with an optional language model. Integration tests run against an embedded Postgres, and Playwright covers the browser.
Outcome
The public site is live at leaseloop.ca, and the product is being hardened for a wider beta.

The cello

What shapes me

The cello is the most honest teacher I have. A passage doesn't improve because I want it to; it improves when I slow it down, listen to what's actually happening, fix one thing and play it again.

That loop of learning, iterating and adapting is the same one I use to build software: ship a small version, watch how it behaves, correct it and repeat. Practice never makes perfect, but repetition with clear intent builds real proficiency.

Teaching cello since 2019 has shown me two more things. Explaining an idea clearly is the fastest way to find out whether you truly understand it, and the moment you think you've mastered something is the moment you stop improving. Pride and complacency end progress; curiosity keeps it going.

More about me

The window

How I see things

From up here, Calgary looks like what it is: a system. Streets, transit, power, weather and a million small decisions all affect one another.

I see the world through models, and the statistician George Box summed up how I think about them: “All models are wrong, but some are useful.” No model can capture every variable, so my understanding will always be incomplete. What matters is building models that are useful enough to support better decisions, and staying humble enough to change them when the evidence changes.

So before I build anything, I start with the outcome and work backward: who's involved, what information moves between them, and where it gets stuck. Most frustration lives at those hand-offs.

Good automation doesn't replace the people in the loop. It takes the repetitive work off their plate, keeps an honest record of what happened, and leaves the decisions that matter with them.

About me

The person behind the room.

I'm Nathan, a finance student in Calgary studying Financial Technology and Innovation at SAIT, after starting out in software engineering at the University of Calgary. At heart, I'm a systems thinker: I like to see the bigger picture and understand the world through models. Most of what I build starts with a problem I've run into myself: rentals where nobody has the full picture, company research that takes too long by hand, and a school year spread across too many apps.

Most of my jobs have come down to keeping information accurate and moving: collecting baseline data for a youth concussion study, evaluating data for TELUS International, coordinating engineers and subcontractors on the 11‑29 runway project at YYC, and running guest experience at a luxury lodge. They taught me that coordination is more than passing information along; it means making sure everyone shares the same understanding of what needs to happen. Finance taught me to look for the numbers behind a claim, and software lets me make those numbers easy to trust. I co-founded LeaseLoop with Noah.

I believe the people around us are our greatest catalyst for growth. I try to lead by example, seek first to understand and then to be understood, and leave people better than I found them.

Away from the desk, there's the cello. I trained through the Royal Conservatory and Mount Royal's Academy Program for Young Artists, played with the Calgary Youth Orchestra, and have taught students since 2019. Practice taught me that progress rarely comes from big leaps. It comes from small, honest corrections, repeated with intent until they stick.

On the bench right now.

  • A background operations agent for LeaseLoop

Lyra handles the follow-up work around a rental: chasing missing details, checking provider credentials and collecting completion evidence. Every action is logged and can be paused or undone.

  • Data quality in the Valuation App

I'm auditing past research runs for stale prices and impossible estimates, fixing the root causes, and flagging the affected history instead of rewriting it.

  • Life OS v0.3

A slimmer redesign that focuses on just two areas, School and Personal, and adds an editable grading scale and GPA calculation.

  • Junior VP of Innovation, SAIT Finance Society

I'm improving the society's website, including a parser that keeps the job board current with LinkedIn postings, and helping to run a paper-trading competition and industry speaker events.
